About The 36ONE MTB Challenge | 2026
Oudtshoorn
The 36ONE MTB Challenge is an annual, single-stage mountain bike race that takes place in South Africa. It is considered one of the toughest endurance races in the world, covering a grueling 361 kilometers (224 miles) in a single day. The race starts and finishes in Oudtshoorn, a small town in the Western Cape province of South Africa, and takes riders through the scenic and challenging terrain of the Swartberg mountain range. The race is open to solo riders and teams of two or three, and it attracts some of the best endurance mountain bikers from around the world. The race route is a mix of gravel roads, jeep tracks, and single-track trails, and includes some steep climbs, technical descents, and river crossings. Riders must navigate through the rugged terrain and changing weather conditions, which can include extreme heat, cold, wind, and rain. The 36ONE MTB Challenge is not just a test of physical fitness and endurance, but also of mental strength and determination. Riders must pace themselves and manage their nutrition and hydration to stay strong throughout the long day. They must also deal with fatigue, pain, and other challenges that come with riding for more than 24 hours straight.
