The Cosmos Challenge Trail Run returns for its 5th edition, offering a 2-day stage race filled with breathtaking scenery, technical trails, and unforgettable experiences. Hosted in the Free State, between Clarens and Fouriesburg, this event combines challenging routes with fairy-tale landscapes. Stage 1 takes place at Old Mill Drift Guest Farm, a historic 1,646-acre property and Warmblood horse stud farm located along the Caledon River, the natural border between South Africa and Lesotho. Runners can choose between 17km and 11km routes, tackling steep climbs, technical terrain, and landmarks like the Aardonyx Discovery Site, where the prehistoric herbivore dinosaur was found. Stage 2 unfolds at the scenic Arpa Adventure Farm, with distances of 26km and 16km. Here, runners will weave through private farmland adorned with millions of blooming cosmos flowers, pass tranquil dams, and enjoy sweeping 180-degree mountain views. The non-technical roads provide a contrasting experience to Stage 1, ensuring a diverse and balanced trail challenge. With routes starting at 07:00 each day, the Cosmos Challenge is the perfect mix of technical endurance running and serene nature immersion. It’s a bucket-list race for trail runners seeking both adventure and tranquility in South Africa’s Free State highlands.
